The Cadet Kart Championship is all about bringing as many people as possible into owner driver karting. That lead to the 112kg cadet category, to give those drivers who are taller (and usually heavier) than the new drivers in Honda Cadet a place to race. Thanks to the increased weight limit, and the limit on having 4kg of ballast on your kart, the CKC 112kg class is that place.

For the opening round of 2021, 5 drivers took to the track in the class, joining on one of the 105 grids. What this did, was show the talent in the relatively small field, as all 5 drivers were mixing it with the lighter 105 entries for the entire day.

In the heats, the name at the front of the field was Lewis Goff. Despite the weight difference, Goff ended the opening heat 7th overall, taking the 112 class win by almost 13 seconds over Addison Smith, who bagged 2nd in class and 13th overall. The fight for 3rd was close between Zach Turner and William Fitton, with Turner taking the first honours.

The 2nd heat saw Goff again taking the top honours in class, on his way to 8th overall. This time, he had to fight for it. Addison Smith chased Goff hard, loosing out on the class win by just a tenth. Behind, Fitton won the battle for 3rd this time, with a healthy margin over Turner.

The truncated final would see Goff take the class pole with Smith 2nd, but there were 2 other 105 karts in between the pair. Fitton was 3rd in class and 15th overall while Turner would line up 17th, directly behind their rival.

When the lights went out, Goff set about moving forward, to put more karts between himself and Smith. By the end of the first lap, Goff had dropped to 7th overall, but still had 2 karts between himself and Smith, who was in 11th. Behind, Fitton and Turner were nose to tail, until a small mistake dropped Turner down to 19th overall.

Back at the front, Goff managed to put another 105 kart between him and Smith, and moved back to 7th overall. Smith also moved forward, getting himself back into 10th. And that would be how they crossed the line. Goff finished with almost 9 seconds over Smith, with Turner snagging 3rd after a 10 second penalty for Fitton.

While at the back, Oliver Green had gone from last to 19th, after showing a great improvement over the weekend, having found almost 2 seconds over the course of the weekend, a solid achievement for the 112 Novice.

The next time the Cadet 112 class is on track will be at Lydd for round 2 of the championship. To get involved in the series, head over to the CKC website. You can also watch the racing back for your self on the CKC Facebook page.
