How Rotax Ended Club100’s Direct-Drive TKM Era

The move began in 2019, replacing direct drive and push-starting with a centrifugal clutch and onboard electric starting; rollout scope remains unclear.

Yes—Club100 switched from its long-serving TKM package to Rotax power for the 2019 season. A November 2018 pre-season report announced the planned move, and Club100’s later records confirm that Rotax operation began in 2019. More than an engine-brand change, it introduced a centrifugal clutch and onboard electric starting, ending the routine of push-starting direct-drive karts.

The short answer: Club100 adopted Rotax power in 2019

Club100 says its Arrive & Drive Championships have run with Rotax 125 MAX engines since 2019, confirming that the proposed switch went ahead. Its official Rotax Racing Club page establishes the adoption year, although it does not give an exact changeover date or identify the first Rotax-powered event.

The sources differ slightly in scope. Club100’s current wording covers its Arrive & Drive Championships broadly, while later retrospective coverage associates the 2019 Rotax introduction particularly with the Junior Series. The evidence therefore supports saying that Club100’s Rotax era began in 2019, but not that every category converted at the same event.

What Club100 replaced after roughly 25 years

Club100 had used air-cooled TKM engines since the championship began in 1993. The archived pre-season report described them as producing around 18 hp and revving to approximately 15,000 rpm; those are the report’s figures rather than independently verified technical specifications. On that chronology, the TKM period lasted about 25 to 26 years, depending on whether the beginning and ending years are counted inclusively.

The defining feature for drivers was direct drive.

Restarting was not simply a matter of pressing a button. A stationary kart could need two people to push it until the engine fired and the driver could rejoin. The change to Rotax ended that routine and removed one of the most distinctive operational features of the old Club100 package.

TKM versus the planned Rotax package

The replacement was described before the season as a modified Rotax Evo package rather than an unrestricted senior-specification engine. In particular, the planned Club100 configuration omitted the powervalve.

That distinction matters when comparing old and current specifications. “Rotax Evo,” “Rotax 125 MAX” and the configurations Club100 uses today should not automatically be treated as identical descriptions of every kart introduced in 2019.

The available launch account does not establish the replacement package’s exact output, gearing or rev limit. Nor does it justify projecting current Junior MAX or Micro MAX specifications backwards across the entire 2019 fleet.

Why the clutch and electric starter mattered

The centrifugal clutch allowed the engine to keep running while the kart was stationary. Rotax’s Touch and Go system also gave the driver an onboard electric starter. Club100’s Driver’s Guide explains the practical result of the 2019 change: drivers could brake to a complete stop and restart without relying on the former two-person push-start procedure.

Consider a spin that leaves the kart stationary but otherwise undamaged. With direct drive, stopping the kart also stopped the engine, potentially leaving the driver waiting for assistance. With a clutch and onboard starter, the driver could stop, restart and rejoin without that routine intervention.

That was a concrete operational improvement for competitors and event staff. It made starting and recovery less dependent on outside assistance, although it does not by itself prove that the Rotax package was faster, cheaper or more reliable over a complete season.

The move was not presented as a sudden idea. Club100 managing director John Vigor was reported as saying that the organisation had considered moving away from direct drive towards clutched, electric-start engines for some time before the opportunity arose.

How Club100 evaluated the Rotax package

The decision followed reported back-to-back track testing against Club100’s established TKM machinery. The archived 2018 account identified test driver Nicky Richardson and veteran Club100 competitors as participants, indicating that the proposed package was assessed by people already familiar with the outgoing karts.

At Whilton Mill, Richardson reportedly found one developed setup pleasant to drive and slightly quicker than a Club100 kart. That was an attributed test-driver impression, not independently published lap-time evidence or proof of a lasting performance advantage.

Vroomkart’s retrospective account says Club100 also evaluated engine longevity and other variables using drivers with different backgrounds and ability levels. For an arrive-and-drive operator, that wider evaluation matters: a fleet package must work for more than one experienced test driver under a narrow set of conditions.

No comparative dataset has been published in the available material, however. The reported testing supports the conclusion that Club100 evaluated the package before adoption, but it does not establish lower costs, better reliability or faster season-long performance.

The plan for keeping arrive-and-drive engines equal

Parity is central to arrive-and-drive racing because the organiser supplies the machinery. A fleet therefore needs a repeatable way to identify and correct performance drift.

The pre-season plan was to test both engines and carburettors on a dynamometer after every 30 operating hours. That interval was expected to produce four or five checks during the season, according to the archived announcement of the planned dyno programme.

That is particularly useful where drivers rotate through organiser-supplied machinery and cannot prepare or tune their own engines.

The schedule must still be treated as a pre-season commitment, not a completed audit. The available record does not confirm that every engine and carburettor received all four or five projected checks during 2019.

The missing powervalve should also be kept separate from the parity plan. Although a modified specification may have practical consequences, the documented reason for omitting the powervalve is unavailable. It cannot safely be presented as a confirmed parity, maintenance or cost measure.

What the evidence does not settle

The supported conclusion is clear: Club100 began using Rotax power in 2019, ending its long-running direct-drive TKM period. Drivers gained the ability to stop and restart without the old push-start routine, while Club100 announced regular dyno testing intended to protect parity across its organiser-supplied fleet.

The available evidence does not establish:

  • the exact first Rotax-powered Club100 event;
  • the category-by-category timing of the rollout;
  • the complete launch specification, including output, gearing and rev limit;
  • measured season-long differences in reliability, cost or performance;
  • whether the planned dyno schedule was completed throughout 2019; or
  • whether Club100’s current engine configuration matches the 2019 package.

The scope question remains particularly important. Club100 now describes Rotax use broadly across its Arrive & Drive Championships, whereas one retrospective account connects the 2019 introduction specifically with the Junior Series. Neither account identifies a single event at which every category changed simultaneously.

Later developments do not resolve that uncertainty. The subsequent expansion of the Cadet Championship and Club100’s later Rotax Racing Club affiliation belong to the continuing relationship, but they do not prove the rationale, technical specification or precise scope of the original rollout.

The defensible account is therefore straightforward: 2019 marked both the confirmed beginning of Club100’s Rotax era and the end of approximately a quarter-century with TKM machinery.
